Wingless, jumping insects that feed on blood.
Where?:Cat and dog fleas are most commonly found in our homes. They can survive up to a year without feeding. Human fleas are less common in the UK.
Bites:
Pierce the skin, inject saliva to prevent clotting, and suck up blood.
Protection:
Once a home is infested, a pesticide that stops them reproducing should be used on carpets and furnishings, and any pets should be treated, too.
Worst-case scenario:
Certain rat fleas transmit typhus and bubonic plague.
