Bites:
Lice puncture the skin, then suck blood. While these bites may itch, it is usually the presence of lice eggs glued to hairs that leads to a diagnosis.
Protection:
A high level of personal hygiene and clean clothes.
Worst-case scenario:
Although there are no recorded incidents in the UK, body lice can transmit bacterial infections and Rickettsial diseases that attack blood and lymph vessels.
