The generic term for two types of large hairy fly which attack horses and cattle as well as humans.

Found mostly in the south, particularly in Dorset and Suffolk, or near animals. More active on warm, sunny days when there is little wind.

The horsefly's mouth works in a scissor-like fashion to slash open the skin, so that the blood seeps out and the fly can lick it up. This makes bites initially much more painful than mosquito bites. When attacking humans, they generally prefer the head and upper body.

As well as covering up, insect repellent permethrin and DEET will deter them.

In Africa, Asia and South America, horseflies are thought to spread Anthrax.
