Small, blood-sucking members of the spider family.
Where?:Woodland, moorland and grassy areas. Ticks cannot jump so they cling on to the tips of vegetation and latch on to a passing animal or human.
Bites:
Once it has found its host, it inserts a probe and most of its head into the skin and sucks blood.
Protection:
When out walking, wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers tucked into socks. Insect repellent, such as permethrin, can also help.
Worst-case scenario:
A bite is rarely painful, but if you find a feeding tick remove it with tweezers as close to the head as possible. Any matter left in can cause infection. However, the most serious danger is that certain types of tick transmit Lyme disease. This is rare but if you've been bitten, watch for a circular rash spreading outwards then consult your GP.
