The deadly Asian tiger mosquito could be UK-bound, as they are attracted to the warm, damp conditions of the British summer, experts have warned.
Where?: Regular mosquitoes have been commonplace throughout the country, particularly in woodland or coastal areas. The tiger mosquito could appear via international trading.
Bites:
The shape of the mosquito's proboscis means the victim is less likely to feel the bite and it's only when the body's immune response kicks in that you are aware of a red, itchy lump. Victims suffer intense headaches, joint pains and insomnia for days afterwards.
Protection:
Long sleeves and trousers; try treating clothes with Permethrin, (available from travel suppliers). DEET-based repellents are also effective. Beware - the tiger mosquito also strikes during the day, not just the evening.
Worst-case scenario:
Malaria, Dengue fever and West Nile Virus are potentially fatal mosquito-borne diseases. If established here, a locally-spread epidemic could ensue.
