When sci-fi remakes get it right
'Frankenstein' (1994)
What's it about? The classic tale of an obsessed scientist, Dr Frankenstein (the admittedly flat Kenneth Branagh) who creates an artificial man (Robert De Niro) out of dead body parts but then rejects him. The Monster escapes but swears revenge.
Why's it better? Remaining faithful to Mary Shelley's book, Branagh's version triumphs thanks to De Niro's makeup heavy portrayal of the Monster. Perfect production design and locations make this a more accessible retelling than the stagey 1931 version, which is in itself a very dated but engaging classic.
