When sci-fi remakes get it right
'Solaris' (2002)
What's it about? A grieving psychologist (George Clooney) is sent to a space station to investigate the death of its crew members, but when he arrives it isn't clear who is dead and who is still alive. As paranoia sets in, his 'dead' wife also appears.
Why's it better? In all respects, Steven Soderbergh's remake isn't actually better, it's just more accessible than Andrei Tarkovsky's numbingly slow 1972 version. However, Soderbergh stays true to the 70s style of filmmaking and creates an intriguing mystery that clocks in at over an hour shorter.
