The 'Rattie' of The Wind in the Willows, this cuddly and often remarkably tame little animal faces crisis.

Some of its marshy waterside habitat has been lost to drainage, pollution and river engineering. But its greatest enemy is the mink, a non-native carnivore that has escaped, or been illegally released, from fur farms.
