Vanishing Britain
The Bumblebee
Of Britain's 25 resident species of bumblebee, nine are in severe decline; three are already extinct. Bumblebees are high-energy consumers that need a constant supply of nectar. Hence they need not only a lot of flowers, but the right kind and not too far apart.
Sadly, small populations of bumblebees are not sustainable: they become inbred and weak, so nature reserves are not the answer.
