Vanishing Britain
The Nightingale
Our leading feathered singer formerly nested in woods and thickets throughout lowland England south of the Humber and east of the Severn. Today its range has contracted by one-third and continues to shrink.
Worse, young nightingales have declined by 62%, which suggests that the bird's breeding performance has plummeted. On current trends the nightingale could cease to breed in Britain by the mid-century.
