The most pioneering and influential photographers
Joe Rosenthal
This iconic photograph, 'Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima' taken on February 23 1945, gained Rosenthal the Pulitzer Prize. Ironically, Rosenthal was initially rejected by the army as a photographer due to his poor eyesight.
This single image was vastly important in the war effort and was heavily marketed by the Allies as a victory symbol used to gain more funds for the war effort and boost morale. In later life he worked for the San Francisco Chronicle for 35 years.
