According to the Daily Mail, Gordon Brown personally signed and backed a proposal for a radical overhaul of British currency. First to go is the patriotic symbol, Britannia, based on a Roman goddess.

This will mark the first time she wasn't featured in the main press of British coinage since 1672. The plan is to replace the traditional image with something that promotes a modern Britain.
