Benjamin Disraeli is credited with bringing this piece of racing slang to wider attention.
His novel 'The Young Duke' (1831) describes a horse race in which two favourites can't make the running while "a dark horse which never had been thought of, and which the careless St James had never even observed in the list, rushed past the grandstand in a sweeping triumph".
