The stories behind the sayings
A wild goose chase (A purposeless errand)
There was, in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, a horseback sport in which a rider would set out on a random course, changing direction at will, while the other participants came behind at measured intervals, trying as accurately as possible to follow in his tracks.
This sport, said to mimic the flight of wild geese behind the leading bird, was a wild goose chase.
