Sailors would frequently smuggle women onboard the ship, so before hitting the high seas an officer would walk along the rows of hammocks shouting "shake a leg!".

Each sailor would then have to stick out a leg from beneath the covers to prove it belonged to a man. Nowadays it's been adopted to mean get out of bed in a hurry and get on with the job at hand.
