NME's 10 best albums of the noughties
2. ‘Up the Bracket’ – The Libertines (2002)
Heralded as a triumphant shot in the arm for the indie and garage rock scene, The Libertines’ debut album was arguably the first British band to reignite the spark championed in the US by the likes of The White Stripes and The Strokes. ‘Up the Bracket’ is an album brimming with radio-friendly guitar hooks played fast and very loose – a trait popularised by its producer, Mick Jones, guitarist of The Clash.
Pete Doherty and Carl BaratÂ’s poetic vocals give this short album a larger, wider-reaching grasp - even if its success threatened DohertyÂ’s health later on.
