NME's 10 best albums of the noughties
1. ‘Is This It’ – The Stokes (2001)
‘Is This It’ was another quickfire blast of something old (garage rock and pop) hurled back into the limelight, giving music lovers a chance to hear what Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground would’ve sounded like if they debuted in the new millennium.
The production is slicker, poppier and less dirty, but that doesn’t make ‘Is This It’ any less vital. All the energy of 20-somethings wasted youth in New York is catapulted across bouncy bass lines, repetitive guitar hooks and world-weary vocals to create something compulsive yet mechanically structured.
