The proposed National Identity Management System, or ID Card scheme as its more commonly known has caused nothing but controversy since it was declared. The government has always argued that these devices will benefit and protect the public but critics argue there is no evidence to support this.
They state that less liberty does not imply greater security and that lifelong surveillance is a dangerous and unacceptably invasive. In short they believe that such massive accumulation of citizens' personal data is a dangerous road to walk, especially when no guarantee can be given on the information's safety.
