But the singer was also famous for her incendiary stage performances, her masochistic tango with drink, her tumultuous love life, and her fatal dalliance with drugs. Joplin died in 1970 of a heroin overdose aged at just 27. She ironically is quoted to have said: "The more you live, the less you die."
