Britain's greatest military heroes
4. Richard the Lionheart
Richard I was King of England from July 6 1189 until his death 10 years later. He also ruled as Duke of Normandy, Duke of Aquitaine, Duke of Gascony, Lord of Ireland, Count of Anjou, Count of Nantes and Overlord of Brittany during the same period.
He was known as Richard the Lionheart, because of his reputation as a great military leader and warrior. At only 16, Richard was commanding his own army, putting down rebellions in Poitou against his own father, King Henry II.
