Britain's greatest military heroes
8. Colonel 'H' Jones
A ComRes poll delved deep into a nation's history full of turmoil and unrest – times in which heroes unforgettably changed our fate. But who is Britain's most treasured?
'H' Jones was the commander of 2 Para, the Parachute Regiment during the Falklands War. Jones led his men into battle at Goose Green on May 27 1982 and was killed leading an attack on an Argentine machine gun post near Darwin.
The lieutenant colonel was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for his bravery. However, many critics believe that his style of front-leading instead of overseeing the entire group from the rear was a poor tactic, not to be condoned by future commanding officers.
