Britain's greatest military heroes
7. Lord Kitchener
Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener is the man whose influence extended British drafting hopefuls during WW1 thanks to his image on the famous 1914 recruitment poster.
After a long and distinguished career which saw him take command in the Mahdist War (1884-1899), the Second Boer War (1900–1902) and act as Commander-in-Chief in India (1902–1909), Kitchener went down with the HMS Hampshire, which sunk west of the Orkney Islands in 1916. He was 65.
