British companies dominate the list of most profitable companies in the European Union.

In Department for Trade and Industry statistics the top 700 companies in Europe were headed up by BP and Shell, both British.

BP reported profits of 13.2bn in 2005, a record for a British company and Shell announced profits of 8.7bn for the same period.
