A 22-year-old woman was banned from buying a box of Christmas crackers because shop staff in Marks and Spencer thought she was under 16, citing the 1875 Explosives Act.
Due to this age-old law, the harmless cracker, home to bad jokes and shoddy toys, was classed as a potentially dangerous explosive thanks to its miniscule amount of gunpowder.
