Students at Anglia and Ruskin University have been warned off following tradition and hurling their mortar boards in the air because of health and safety fears. The university's decision to give such a deterrent follows a student receiving a head wound and needing stitches due to a flying hat.

If Anglia and Ruskin officials are correct in their belief that the graduation ritual is a danger, cap tossing could be legally banned nationwide.
