The animal kingdomÂ’s biggest myths
Is a camelÂ’s hump filled with water?
Surely thatÂ’s how they stay hydrated while roaming the desert? In actuality, the hump is full of fat. Its bloodstream is really its main source of water. The fat can be converted to energy, creating water as a by-product but thatÂ’s still not where the majority is stored.
Unlike many mammals, a camelÂ’s blood cells are oval shaped instead of round meaning that they can slip through veins and arteries much easier when the camel is dehydrated. They can also absorb plenty of water without rupturing, sweat a lot less and reflect sunlight with their coats.
