The 10 most confusing films ever made
3. 'Donnie Darko' (2001)
'Donnie Darko' baffled the film world, but made a big impact. Here was a film not sure of what it was - mystery, film noir, social comedy, thriller, paranoia drama, time travel fantasy? With Jake Gyllenhaal as the brooding teen tormented by a human-sized prophetic rabbit and Patrick Swayze as a sleazy motivational speaker, it had it all, and that lovely cover of 'Mad World' by Gary Jules.
As famous as the film was around its release, it didn't actually make back its small $4.5m budget at the cinema and flopped. It became a DVD classic. The Director's Cut actually made sense but in doing so spoiled the film's mysterious tone.
