Eyes wide open
In 1960, Edinburgh University researcher Ian Oswald set out to prove that people can sleep through anything. He taped open the eyes of three volunteers before exposing them to flashing lights, loud music and even shocks.
Despite this, all three fell asleep within 12 minutes and Oswald's theories were proven, setting him up as a highly regarded pioneer.
