In one room, the London gallery focuses on the lengths forgers will go to deceive, as shown in this piece which was purchased in 1923, believed to be an authentic work from the 15th century Renaissance profile portrait artist.

However scientific analysis exposed the deception, when it was revealed the artist had used pigments not available before the 19th century. The forger has even coated the top layer with shellac, a natural resin, to simulate the appearance of age.
