Fakes, mistakes and discoveries in art
Dead Soldier, unknown artist (National Gallery)
The National Gallery is unveiling off some of its most embarrassing acquisitions for a new exhibition looking at fake and rediscovered artworks.
Close Examination will feature pieces that had been removed from view after research revealed they were not what they were thought to be. More than 40 works of art will go on display at the gallery in June.
This piece was originally thought to be the work of Spanish master, Diego Velzquez. This theory has since been discounted but its artist remains a mystery.
