All went smoothly as Manchester United thrashed Roma 2-0 in the 2008 quarter final (first leg) of the Champions League, both on and off the pitch. This is in stark contrast to the clubs' 2007 meeting where savage violence erupted.

Prior to this match, close to 300 Manchester United fans were ambushed by Roma's knife-wielding 'Ultras' on a bridge close.

Three Middlesbrough fans were also stabbed by Ultras before their club's UEFA Cup game against Roma in 2006. Five years earlier, Ultras were blamed when five Liverpool fans were knifed.
