Originally, angels were heaven's poor relations who were lumbered with sorting out human affairs instead of looking after Eden or singing with the cherubs.

Some believe that a soul grows in steps from a mineral, to a plant, then an animal and then to a human. When the human dies, a soul can then decide to become an angel. Films like 'City of Angels' have popularised romanticised visions like this into popular society.
