An advert for Yves Saint Laurent featuring an unhealthily thin model, with a visible rib cage and stick-thin legs, has been banned following numerous complaints from readers. In the photo, the woman, who was shot in black and white, was wearing a short black dress lying on the floor with her eyes closed.
Readers called the ad, which appear in Elle UK, irresponsible for using a model who appeared malnourished.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), in a statement, said: "We therefore considered that the model appeared unhealthily underweight in the image and concluded that the ad was irresponsible."
It ruled that the ad must not appear again in its current form, adding: "We told the advertisers to ensure that the images in their ads were prepared responsibly."
Meanwhile, YSL declined to comment on the ruling.
The ban follows an NHS report showing that more and more teenagers are being admitted to hospital with eating disorder.
Earlier this year, another YSL ad for its perfume Black Opium was also criticised with consumer complaining that it glamorize and trivialized drug use and addition. However, it was cleared by the ASA.
