What is Samsung Gigabit 5G
Samsung has developed “lampposts†base stations to beam gigabit 5G straight to users’ home.

Samsung has developed base stations that could replace fibre cables in users’ homes to boost the rollout of 5G to phones. These stations deliver “last mile” broadband connectivity to users via lampposts or power lines.
The company is currently trialing the technology in the UK and in its Suwon headquarters in South Korea.
The base stations can be fixed to any existing infrastructure. The tech giant said that each can deliver up to 10Gbps that can be divided into multiple beams before reaching multiple homes. The technology is expected to replace the last portion of fibre that is currently used in ‘fibre-to-the-home’ services for a fraction of cost and time. By doing so, they are able to minimise the distance between the source of signal and potential signal loss.
The base stations are going to be the first major milestone in bringing 5G to the mass market. Samsung has already partnered with AT&T and Verizon to trial the technology in the US. The company is also in talks with commercial partners and network operators in a bid to expand its existing trials over the coming months.
