Warwick To Upgrade CCTV Cameras
Warwick District Council to spend £1 million on CCTV upgrade.
15:23 30 July 2018
Warwick District Council has agreed to upgrade its 190 CCTV cameras after the system was deemed to be at “critical risk” of failing.
The cameras are located in the town centres of Warwick, Leamington and Kenilworth and in all district council car parks. They have helped solve a number of crimes in the past. They were instrumental in the arrest of Vijay Masih, who had punched and killer Robert Bavington in April 2016. He was sentenced to six years in prison. The cameras also played a crucial role in convicting Jamie Riddick, who was drunk when he crashed a car and killed three of his four passengers. Riddick denied driving the car, but CCTV footage proved otherwise. He was jailed for nine years.
The outdated cameras will be upgraded to dome cameras and they will be operated wirelessly. The new CCTV control room will be in the council’s new headquarters. The total cost of the scheme is estimated to be between £800,00 and £1 million.
