The age of 5G: What does it offer and what can we expect when it is finally launched in 2020?

5G is the highly anticipated next-generation mobile network that is set to be launched in the UK in 2020. It could be sooner since standard bodies have consistently delivered ahead of schedule. The final part of the 5G foundation, the 5G standalone network specification, has been recently delivered and could fast track 5G’s deployment.

 

5G, which is expected to deliver up to 100 times faster speed and ultra low latency, will have a real impact on homes, businesses, and communities. A recent whitepaper released by O2 suggests that the technology will save the UK’s local authorities up to £2.8billion a year by increasing efficiency in many areas.

 

Unlike 4G, which replaced 2G and 3G when it was launched eight years ago, 5G will not replace 4G in 2020. In fact, 5G will take some time to establish itself. The new generation network will work hand in hand with 4G, with the latter serving as the national baseline network while super-fast 5G speeds is offered in more built-up areas.

 

5G will boost Internet of Things (IoT) and will pave the way for the technology to reach its full potential by transporting intelligence, processing power and communication capabilities across networks, mobile devices and connected networks.
