Ways to protect yourself against VoIP security threats.

Using VoIP services as an alternative to traditional analog phones opens you up to a new set of potential issues. Below are the most common and how you can protect yourselves against them.
· Spam over Internet Telephony (SPIT) – This is very similar to spam emails in many ways. It involves receiving unsolicited messages that can waste your time and energy. This problem can be avoided by taking advantage of robocall blocking features that keep random automated calls from reaching your phone.
· Unencrypted traffic – If the calls you’re making or receiving are not encrypted, it will become easier for other people to eavesdrop on your conversations. This becomes a huge problem if you mention any important information that other people can use to steal your identity or put you in physical danger. This does not have to bother you at all because many VoIP providers ensure that your calls are encrypted. Business VoIP services, such as Jive and Vonage Business, offer encryption by routing calls directly through their cloud servers.
· Hacking – VoIP allows you to access your number and voicemail from anywhere using a mobile device or computer. Unfortunately, this also makes your phone service vulnerable to hackers. You can prevent this problem from occurring by changing all your passwords and PINs right away. Also, protect your Wi-Fi network with Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) protocol.
