Mel Gibson has confirmed that he and his girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva are expecting their first child, a month after the couple went public with their relationship.

The 'Lethal Weapon' star announced the pregnancy on popular US chat show 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno', declaring, "This is true", after Leno quizzed him about the baby rumours.

Russian musician Grigorieva, who met Gibson in 2008 after she was signed to his Icon Records label, is in her second trimester and due later in the year, according to People Magazine.

The 53-year-old Oscar winner already has seven children with estranged wife Robyn. Grigorieva also has a teenage son to James Bond actor Timothy Dalton.

On the show Leno teased Gibson over the amount of children he already has, saying: "So that will make 29?". To which Gibson responded: "Well, actually eight. I guess I'm Octo-Mel."

Robyn Gibson recently filed for divorce from the 28-year marriage, citing 'irreconcilable differences', following a three-year separation. She is expected to be awarded half of Gibsons estimated $US900 million (605 million) fortune.
