Being directly related to a hugely respected film director (in this case, the mind-bending David Lynch), always guarantees a somewhat cushy entry into the industry, but Jennifer Lynch shunned that and the filmmaking community. Her first film was the box office and critical disaster ‘Boxing Helena’ which told the story of a surgeon who is obsessed with his lover so much so that he amputates her limbs and confines her in his house.
While a film with that plot was never going to send queues around the cinemas, it was a highly ambitious film that affirmed that Lynch wasn’t just cashing on her father’s name. 15 years passed with no films, then in 2008 she exploded back on the screen, writing and directing the brutal whodunit ‘Surveillance’ which used different film stocks and photography styles to represent the different witnesses’ points of view.
