Bassist Steven Harris attributes the band name to 'The Man in the Iron Mask' and so the group was named after the featured torture device. In case you are wondering, this is a box big enough to admit a man, that has folding-doors which are studded with sharp iron spikes.

When the doors close, the spikes are forced into the body of the victim, who was left there to die in horrible torture.
