Back in the day Nintendo were the pioneers of console gaming. Having jumped on the Atari bandwagon earlier than most and revolutionised the gaming world with the release of the NES they were set for the release of the SNES and more.

They were not alone though. Mario had strong opposition in the form of a little blue hedgehog and the SNES was set for a face off with the Megadrive. Sega were ready to make their play.

For several years it worked too. Yet by 2001 Sega shifted emphasis to software development. The glory of the Megadrive had come and gone and Sega had given up on the console war.
