A little boy is cursed with the gift of being able to see dead people. He forges a close bond with psychiatrist Dr. Malcolm Crowe, who is struggling with the breakdown of his marriage following a near fatal shooting years ago.

It is revealed that Dr Crowe himself is dead, not having survived his "near fatal" injuries shown at the beginning of the film, and has been another of the boy's deathly visitors.
