9. The Massacre of the Innocents by Sir Peter Paul Rubens (£47m)
While it has draped the walls of the London National Gallery until 2008 and then to an Ontario gallery, this vivid biblical depiction of the great massacre is owned by Canadian press magnate Kenneth Thomson. Thomson paid £47,927,294 ($75,930,440) for it in London in 2002.
