First women to compete in a horse race
On August 25 in 1804, Alicia Meynell became the first female jockey to compete in England. At the tender age of 22-years-old she rode side saddle in a four-mile race in York.
Geraldine Rees would later become the first woman to compete in the Grand National in 1982.
