The 2005 film, which was created and directed by Joss Whedon, took an earth shattering 61% of the votes in an online poll conducted by SFX magazine.

The film was a conclusion of the one season long TV series "Firefly" and despite only being created in 2005, it has been ranked by the voters as their all time favourite sci-fi film.

SFX editor Dave Bradley said it was a "massive surprise" to see Serenity beating Star Wars. "The TV show may have been cancelled, yet the Serenity universe clearly struck a chord with fans, thanks to its likeable characters, witty dialogue and amazing special effects."
