In at third was Luxembourg, the capital of the tiny landlocked country of the same name .
Serving up such an impressive array of contrasts, unrivalled by most European cities, Luxembourg has grown from its beginnings as "Lucilinburhuc" the seat of Siegfried (the first Count of Luxembourg) to the prosperous metropolis it is today.
Thousands of years of turbulent history now offers tourists plenty to see and do as the city's silhouette towers above the impressive remains of the historic fortress.
