The movie is based on the semi-autobiographical books by Mark Brandon "Chopper" and it was the author himself who suggested that Eric Bana play the lead in the Aussie film. Bana spent two days living with the real-life Chopper to help him practice for the role and he proved to be far from the clean cut persona he conveys in reality.
