Perplexing pet misconceptions explained
"Do I look happy?"
Many people think they are pretty good at guessing how their pets are feeling, what they enjoy and when they are unhappy. But according to recent research released by animal charity PDSA, many won't know quite as much as they think they do!
It's a common sight, a dog bashing its tail about in excitement. But while a wagging dog does generally convey contentment, a twitching or wiggling tail can also be a sign of agitation or that they are ready to fight. A dog's tail is an important communication device for them and one of the reasons while tail docking for appearance should be avoided.
The nose should not be the only way of testing for the health of a dog either. Although a cold, wet nose does tend to indicate well pooch, it could also be wet from excessive licking due to discharge. Keep an eye out for a red or ulcerated snout, a dog's nose should be smooth and even. A warm, dry nose should not be the cause for panic either. Other behaviours such as being off their food, inactivity, depression or excessive drinking are more effective signs of illness.
