Firefighters' breathing apparatus
Before the 70s the average weight of breathing apparatus was more than 30 pounds, meaning that some exhausted firefighters went into blazes without any to save weight. NASA engineers adapted the life support systems used by astronauts for use with emergency services, creating a pack which was a third lighter.
