Fascinating St Patrick's Day facts
Celebrating sewage!
The Chicago River is famous for being dyed green during the festivities. The tradition started in 1962, when city pollution-control workers used dyes to trace illegal sewage discharges.
They then realised that the green dye might be better suited for the holiday. The same year they released 100 pounds of green vegetable dye into the river — enough to keep it green for a week.
